Stone walls change how a home feels. They dampen noise, hold the day’s cool, and add the kind of character you can’t paint on. At Ancient Surfaces, we tailor each antique limestone wall veneer to the architecture and to how you live, choosing the stone family, color range, and layering pattern that fits the room, not the other way around.

At the stair landing, we used Kronos Stone, 17th-century limestone, selected for its cool greys and durable face. It’s set in a random ashlar, blocks of varied heights and lengths laid in staggered courses, with lightly raked lime joints. The texture catches the skylight above and gives the narrow passage a grounded, secure feel.

Around the arched window, the warmer Antique Biblos Stone keeps the kitchen bright. We laid it in coursed ashlar, even, horizontal courses, then formed the arch with radiating voussoirs to echo the window shape. Tumbled arrises and a soft honed face make splashes easy to wipe while keeping that hand-worked look.

For a transitional nook, we returned to Kronos Stone but tuned the feel by switching to a semi-coursed ashlar: mostly level bands broken by taller stones for rhythm. Deep-set lime pointing lets shadows read between blocks, so a simple sconce turns the wall into evening texture, perfect for a console vignette.

In the dining room, the ceiling does the talking. We used Antique Tuscan Pietra Rustica in a rubble layering small, hand-dressed stones set tightly in a barrel-vault. The natural peach and cream tones warm the light over the table, and the lime mortar keeps the room breathing the way old Mediterranean houses do.

A cellar wants calm and durability. We lined the walls in Antique Biblos Stone laid semi-coursed for a steady cadence, then framed openings with dressed limestone arches for strength. The brick vault above handles moisture swings; the stone veneer below stays cool, making this a practical and beautiful place to age bottles.
From random ashlar to coursed ashlar, from rubble to dressed arches, each pattern changes the mood and performance of a room. Whether you’re after a bright kitchen backdrop, a quiet stair hall, or a robust wine cellar, Ancient Surfaces will source the right reclaimed limestone: Kronos, Biblos, or Tuscan pietra rustica and lay it in the pattern that suits your home and your routines. Tell us your palette and the way you use the space; we’ll build a wall that looks like it has always belonged there.
